In order to finalise our story, we decided to each type up a rough version of where we felt the story was heading, so we could combine our ideas into one. Below are all our separate ideas for the story, followed by our combined story.
An elderly woman is in an abandoned run down mansion, and she spends her time there making clothes and sewing dresses out of any materials she can find. She spends her time in a cluttered room full of paintings, sewing machines, old looms and mannequins. When she is not sewing she spends the rest of her time in the mirror, obsessing over the image that she sees and believes is her, an image of a young beautiful woman. She tries to replicate the clothes she sees in the collection of pictures, paintings and tapestries that hang on the walls, and tries to copy the dress she sees in the mirror. She becomes more and more lost in her false reality, and she starts to see her shabby dresses come to life on the mannequins, which start to move and dance with her. In reality she is dying, but as she comes nearer to the end of her life her illusion is starting to take over and her reality is lost. She makes her final dress, and dances with the ghost people who wear her dresses. She watches her beautiful self in the mirror, dancing in a glamorous ballroom full of dancing shapes and silhouettes. A young mans' hand comes out of the mirror and and full of happiness and joy, *(says last line to her young self in the mirror, or younger self says to her)* she takes the hand and steps into the mirror. Her illusion completely takes over and we are in a dreamlike, ornate, sophisticated ballroom with the beautiful younger lady, and she dances around the ballroom, and down the steps of her now beautiful mansion into the beautiful city.
Our story is about the loss of youth, and wanting to be young again. Our main character is seeing her younger self in the mirror and she becomes obsessed with what she sees and how she feels when she sees herself so young. But in reality she is very old and dying, and when she steps into the mirror it is really her stepping out of this world. We are leaving it very ambiguous as we wanted it to be profound and not immediately obvious as to what is happening, as that may take away emotion.
We begin with a shot of the city, focusing in on an old tailor shop. The shop is rundown and older than the surroundings. The next shot is from inside a room in the shop. We hear the sound of the front door opening, footsteps up the stairs, then the door to room opens. An old woman flicks on a light, she's carrying fabrics and and old photograph. Placing the fabrics on a desk, she pins the photo to the wall with a few others she's pinned there previously. The photo is of a young woman in a beautiful dress. She ponders for a moment, pulling up a piece of fabric to compare. Taking the fabric with her, she walks into the center of the room and pulls out a mannequin before she gets to work, pinning the fabric to it. She's surrounded by other mannequins in half finished dresses - all failed attempts. As she's working, a mannequin behind her seems to come to life, she turns to face it only for it to disappear. Going back to her work, she runs between the mannequin and her desk, pulling, fabric and photos, crossing out pictures and throwing away fabrics, muttering to herself. The camera pulls away to reveal a wall covered in pictures and fabrics, showing her obsession. She pulls one picture from the pull, smiling at it. She plays music on a gramophone before she rushes back to the dress she's making. As she applies the fabric, arms and a head sprout from it. The figure admires itself as she works, and the other mannequins begin to come to life too. The next sequence shows her still making the dress while the mannequins dance. Finally her work is finished, and she removes the dress. Approaching the end of the room, she pulls a blanket off a large mirror, and giggles to herself. Her reflection in the mirror shows her as a young woman wearing the beautiful dress she has made and is now wearing. She admires herself and dances, losing herself. Her reflection reaches out of the mirror, pulling her in. Inside the mirror, she dances with the other mannequins, as well as ghosts of other men and women. They dance, then begin to fade, until it's just her, twirling alone as the music fades and it goes dark.
Starts off with shot of the city, then moves through and open window into an old mansion/seamstress home. Within the room there's several failed dresses, torn, old paintings and pictures of beautiful dresses, cut up materials, sewing needles etc., light only by the twilight. Sound of a door opening and hurried footsteps up stairs can be heard, suddenly the door opens and an old woman, hidden by the rolls of materials she's holding, swings open the door, runs inside and lays down the materials. She pins up a newly acquired portrait of a beautiful dress amongst her ever growing collection. She then begins her work in making her final dress.
During the making of her new dress, several mannequins seem to sketchily come to life, but disappear the moment the old woman looks at them. Finally after much attention to making the dress, she places it upon a new mannequin, which too sketchily comes to life, admires itself, twirls, and then becomes still again as the woman comes back as she grabs the dress delicately.
Next a large mirror is seen, pristine and beautiful amongst all the dusty and lifeless room. footsteps can be heard as we see feet slowly walking forward towards the mirror. The old woman is now wearing the dress proudly and somewhat curiously as she gazes into the mirror. The reflection in the mirror is that of the woman, but far younger, with the mannequin's reflections coming to life again, in beautiful dresses and suits. The scenery in the mirror changes to that of a ballroom, all lit up and luxurious. The woman presses her hand against the mirror (or she grabs a hand from either herself or a suitor extended out to her from the mirror?) and steps into the ballroom. She looks around surprised and excited, now younger and more alive, she soon meets a sketchy young suitor who extends his hand, she speaks (with no words can be heard?) and accepts his offer and begins to dance. As she dances the abstract party goers become slightly more and more detailed. The woman dances happily into the crowd, and herself becomes sketchier and sketchier, but still noticeable among the dancers. As the music continues to play the ballroom fades to black, the music then too begins to fade out.
Opening shot of old tailor shop in a city. The shop is old and worn down, while the nearby buildings are slightly taller and newer. The next shot is from inside an upstairs room in the tailors. It's pitch black, the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs is heard, the door swings open, revealing the silhouette of an old woman carrying fabrics. She shuts the door and the room is pitch black, the next shot is her lighting a candle. She puts up an old picture of a young woman in a beautiful dress and ponders it for a moment. The wall is covered in old paintings and photos. The old woman turns to reveal many mannequins wearing failed dresses, and one undressed mannequin.
She sets to work, picking out fabrics, needles, and threads, moving the mannequin to the center of the room. As she sets the mannequin in place she catches a glimpse of herself in a large mirror at the end of the room. Seeing her aged reflection, she shies away behind the mannequin, and gets to work. As she works, a ghost appears from one of the mannequins and begins dancing around her. The old woman smiles at it as it goes, but quickly goes back to sewing. As the ghost dances, it knocks a gramophone, that begins to play music. After doing this, two more ghosts come to life, and rush to the other ghost to begin dancing. They try to get the old woman to join, but she brushes them away. Continuing to dance, more ghosts come to life, swirling around the old woman, taking needles and fabric from her to get her to join the dance. She chases them in her frustration, but to no avail, they are faster and more youthful. The woman gives up, her form flashes, ghost-like, as she falls to the floor. The dancing and the music stops. All but one ghost vanishes. The ghost approaches the old woman and hands her a needle before helping the woman to her feet and disappearing. The woman goes back to work on the mannequin, and it comes to life, admiring itself as she works. Finally the woman steps away and admires her work, it's complete.
The woman approaches the mirror, wearing her new dress. Her reflection shows her younger self, wearing the same dress. The music starts again, and she begins to dance. As she spins, her reflections stops, and reaches out its hand. The old woman takes it, and is pulled into the mirror. Inside the mirror is a ballroom full of colourful dancing ghosts. The woman dances in the middle of them. As she spins, the room begins the fade, the ghosts disappear one by one, until she is alone in a dark empty space, dancing away.
It fades to black, the music stops.
